Barnsley borough is fairground country we know well, and we're in it regularly. Kit leaves the Rotherham warehouse north up the M1 for town-centre programmes, show fields and school fairs, and two of the venues we know best are in this borough: Penistone Showground and Elsecar Heritage Centre, each with its own way of wanting a funfair done.
For a show field the pitch is the full spread - the big rides with the row of stalls and the food underneath, which is the shape that keeps a family on site for the afternoon. Town squares and closed streets ask for something more compact: a centrepiece you can see across the square, a couple of stalls, and everything up and down inside the access window the council gives you.
