The Derby everyone remembers, on a Christmas grid

The fairground Derby trained every generation to roll a ball uphill - and this is that game with a Father Christmas coat: reindeer in place of horses, and the points decided by which hole swallows your ball. Good adds to good; the reindeer climbs the lane.

Two racers fit a cabinet. Link the twin and it runs four wide, the whole rig sitting under a winter header board and skirt sleigh, reindeer and pines printed across the front. Inside, the score strips glow down each lane and the commentary mic keeps narrating, which is most of the sound of a busy event floor. Swap the skirt artwork for your own colours or crest if the booking wants it - that prints in-house.

Sounds like Kentucky Derby or Roll and Bowl to some ears and Donkey Derby to most - they all point here. What earns it a December diary is the noise: parties, exhibitions, promo stands, trade fairs and team nights all take the volume, and part of it is that everyone claims to be bad at it and nobody plays one heat.

Space and surfaces

A cabinet stands 10ft x 6ft and 7ft high, and wants a 12ft x 8ft patch of floor at that height to let players and operator breathe.

Inside, artificial grass or bare hard floor both work. Outside it copes with grass, concrete, hard ground, the mixed grass-and-hard ground or wood chip - but only with a roof over it; a pop-up gazebo or marquee does that job, and we hire both.

£995 is the entry figure for one two-player cabinet, VAT on top. For the four-wide twin rig and the Christmas packages around it, put the date in and we'll come back with the numbers - plus any minimum spend in your area.
