The hobby-horse derby, dressed for Christmas

Four players take a reindeer-headed pole each - blue, yellow, red, green - and pump it like there's a prize on the line, which there usually is, to run their reindeer along the tabletop track. It's the old hobby-horse derby wearing tinsel: picket fence round the lot, snow printed behind, and Rudolph in sunglasses over the front skirt.

At £499 the trained operator's first three hours are in the price, so nobody from your side has to mind the game. Safety mats go across the play area, and the tabletop height suits primary-school children and adults alike - children race as hard as the adults, which is what makes this the dependable moneymaker of the December kit: office dos, hotel party nights, weddings that want a laugh after dinner, school fairs, trade stands. Ask the office how fast the December Saturdays go, then book before they do.

Altogether an indoor creature: a hard floor or artificial grass to sit on and a socket within reach of the sound-and- timing box, so it sits out wet grass entirely. Under canvas is fine though - pop one of our gazebos over it and the market square becomes a flat track.

£499 plus VAT covers the game and the first three hours of operator. Some postcode areas carry a minimum spend - the quote says either way.

Hotel function rooms across South Yorkshire have run it, and so have festive staff dos inside Amazon's UK fulfilment centres. At the works party it earns its patch because four race at once: the game runs itself, half the room stands behind the racers, and the operator swaps the next four in without schedule.

Along a hotel dance floor it turns queues all night; at school fairs the youngest manage fine on their knees. If the operator's covered hours run past, you can add more - or your hall steward can be shown the basics between heats.

What space does the game need?

The unit is 10ft x 6ft and 7ft high. Give it a 12ft x 8ft patch including room for operator and players, and allow 2.6ft for the tightest doorway it will take.

Can it go outdoors?

Only under full cover - it's built for halls and flat floors and won't sit out on wet grass. Under a pop-up gazebo from our range it does a square pitch happily.

Is an operator included?

Up to three hours of trained operator is inside the price. Extra hours are simple to add - talk to us about extended hours and supervision if your event runs longer than the standard shift.

What ages can play?

The poles sit at tabletop height, so primary-school children race fine and the adults get as honest a contest out of it.

What if I've got more budget?
